Confronting Patents on Plants Last month, the Public Patent Foundation filed a lawsuit on behalf of 60 family farmers, seed businesses, and organic agriculture organizations against Monsanto. The case, Organic Seed Growers & Trade Association, et al. v. Monsanto, challenges some of the company’s patents on genetically engineered seed. OSA is not a plaintiff in this case, but we do advocate for changes to the current intellectual property regime.

Happy Earth Day! In the spirit of Earth Day, let’s recommit to some of the founding tenets of the organic movement: principles that ensure the ecological and human health of future generations; protect genetic and biological diversity; and acknowledge farmers’ role as seed stewards and right to save seed.

Join OSA at the Mother Earth News Fair in Puyallup, WA! Experts from across the country will provide insight into many of today’s environmental issues – and offer solutions – at the Mother Earth News Fair June 4-5 at the Puyallup Fairgrounds.

Regulatory Oversight of GE Crops Just Got Weaker It’s disturbing that just when a stronger regulatory framework is needed more than ever — as recent court decisions with alfalfa and sugar beets pointed out — USDA  has announced a two-year “pilot project” to help make approvals of GE crops happen faster. One proposal under this new regulatory approach allows chemical and biotechnology firms to conduct their own environmental assessments. The conflict of interest is laughable. But we’re not laughing.
